They Eat... Omsk (Russia)

We have no idea why we decided to stop in Omsk. We also have no idea why we chose to stop there for less than 24 hours. We arrived at 5:00PM and left the next day at 2:00PM. It was an adventure and we do not regret it.

When we were in Moscow, we met a Russian at a great little bar (more to come on that in another post). We shared our trans siberin adventures and when we mentioned we went to Omsk, he said,

“Why?? Even Russians don’t go to Omsk!”

Keep in mind, if you are on the Trans Siberian and you do not stop in Omsk, you will be on the train for 28 hours between Tyumen and Yekaterinburg.

Our time was short, it rained the whole time, we never found our Agoda Home booking (and Agoda couldn’t help us either), and so overall, we don’t have much positives to share. Upon reflection though, we had a great 21 hours in Omsk because of the two restaurants we ate at - I know, it had to be food that saved it.

So check these two places out if you ever end up in Omsk:

U Shveyka: so we were effectively homeless when we realized we would never find the Agoda Home. As I looked on Airbnb to find an instant booking place (it was great), Ian found this restaurant that has his other love in life: craft beers. He needed comfort food so had a cheeseburger and his new favorite dish in Russia: smoked mackerel. I found a lamb stew on the menu and it was by far the best lamb stew I have ever eaten (in and out of Russia).

Lapshichnaya with Little Flower in Big Window: this is the #1 rated restaurant on TripAdvisor for Omsk out of 1000+ restaurants and it serves asian noodles. It was also open early enough for us to go before our 2:00PM train. We had their bulgogi beef noodle, a pho, and a chicken ramen. It was exactly what we needed after the excitement of the night before.
